INTRODUCTION TO LION DEFENDERS

A country has declared war with Singapore after being embroiled in a conflict with her for the past three years. It alleges that Singapore was behind the recent assassination of its president, Hutu Sami. Nobody is sure what the truth behind it is, but as the tension rises amongst both parties, bloodshed seems imminent. Word is spreading around that a large third party political organization is involved in framing Singapore, for it has vested interest if both countries clash. You are called upon by the Singapore Armed Forces as a soldier in the 9th infantry division. Starting out as a conscript, you have to complete certain missions and objectives in order to uncover the truth behind the assassination before both countries clash. But, are you up to the task?

Engage in hours of fun and adrenaline pumping action taking down enemies with a huge arsenal of sophisticated and unique weapons developed by our very own Defence of Science and Technology Agency (DSTA). Complete various missions such as defusing bombs, rescuing hostages and even assassinating enemy’s commanders to rise through the ranks, eventually leading a team to fight against the enemies and defend Singapore.

Once you got the basics of the game through the campaign mode, you can log on to the online battle mode and compete with your friends. See who can take down the most enemies or work together to complete a mission. Choose from various roles and classes such as sniper, grenade launcher, or even engineer to sabotage your enemy. With its life like models and detailed landscapes, this game will bring a new physicality and reality to gamers, allowing them to experience what the real battlefield is like.

FEATURES

CHARACTERS

A range of characters of different ranks will be offered in the game. Starting out as a recruit, players would be presented with opportunities to rise through the ranks, based on their ability to accomplish various missions. The ranks in the game range from enlisted personnel and junior officers to general level personnel. While admittedly it takes a lot more than accomplishing missions to reach a general level rank, due to the short-term nature of the game, the game’s realism in this aspect would have to be compromised a bit. However, we believe that players should be astute enough to not take the game as fully equal to a real-life experience in the Army.

WEAPONRY

As the game would have, among others, the intent to educate the target audience of teenage National Service pre-enlistees, the weaponry featured in the game would be weaponry primarily utilized currently by the Singapore Armed Forces. Such weaponry include, for instance, the M16-S1 rifle, and rifles designed and manufactured in Singapore such as the SAR-21 and the SR-88 rifles. In addition, the range of weaponry would include grenades, MATADOR (an unguided short range anti-armour weapon), and the Bionix II Infantry Fighting Vehicle, among others.

The SAR-21 rifle

This would enhance the realism of the game as well, and give an accurate virtual experience of life in the Singapore Armed Forces. However, due to the fact that this game is Army-centric, the weaponry and equipment featured would only be those utilized by the Army and no Navy or Air Force equipment would be included for the time being.

LANDSCAPES

In order to enhance the realism of the game as well as to make it a uniquely Singaporean training experience, the game would feature familiar landscapes throughout, such as MRT stations.

In addition, it would also feature landscapes unfamiliar to the target teenage National Service pre-enlistee audience, such as the Basic Military Training Centre located at Pulau Tekong, so as to familiarize them with the process of National Service and other sites associated with the Singapore Armed Forces.

SCENARIO 1: BASIC MILITARY TRAINING

The player starts off the game, having just been enlisted as a National Serviceman. In this stage, he has to follow the various tutorials to gain an understanding on how to use your weapons and inventory.

The landscape featured in this stage would be the Basic Military Training Centre located in Pulau Tekong, with an emphasis on physical training sites such as obstacle courses. The aim of this stage of the game is to acquire skills like mastering the basic movements in the game (for instance, jump, walk, dodge, etc.) as well as to operate weaponry like rifles and grenades.

Due to the basic nature of this stage, only basic training weapons and armory would be featured. Based on how well the player has done in the physical training courses and tests, the player will be given chances to advance from the rank of a recruit to that of a private, a corporal or a lance corporal.

SCENARIO 2: TERRORIST ATTACK!

In this stage, a bomb has been found in an MRT station, a scenario similar to that of a terrorist incident a few years back. The intention of simulating such an incident is to provide a sense of realism to the game, as well to present the concept of always being prepared for such a situation. The player’s unit has been dispatched to defuse this bomb, and the player is required to act accordingly to the instructions of his superior and to aid in the dispersion of the crowd and ensure the safety of civilians, as well as to assist in the defusing of the bomb.

In addition, the player and his comrades has to engage in combat with terrorists who have ambushed the unit, determined to ensure that the bomb goes off as planned. The aim of this stage is to acquire skills like crowd dispersion, the protection of civilians, hand-to-hand combat as well as bomb defusing. Moreover, the player’s ability to work within a team with minimal communication is tested, as he has to work with his comrades in tandem to carry out multiple tasks at once.

However, emphasis is placed not on killing terrorists but on ensuring the safety of civilians, with more points given for civilians being brought to a designated Safe Zone than for terrorists being killed. Points will also be taken off for civilian bystanders who are killed in the ongoing battle between soldiers and terrorists, and players risk demotion.

Weaponry featured include bomb-defusing tools as well as designated rifles and other hand weapons. The player gets the chance to advance in rank, up to that of junior officer rank, depending on the competency with which he has accomplished the various missions.

In addition, in this stage of the game, there will be the appearance of a mystery to foreshadow and to further the plot: a SIM card was found on one of the dead terrorists’ bodies that could possibly lead to information about those behind the terrorist attack. However, when the SIM card is placed into a phone, the information in the SIM card is locked, with a password needed before it can be unlocked.

SCENARIO 3: CAPTURED!

In this stage, terrorists have managed to kidnap twelve civilians and are now demanding a ransom as well as the release of criminals who have been imprisoned for terrorist activities in exchange for the victims.

The superior leading the unit has been killed in previous terrorist attack on the MRT station, and the player’s mission is to lead a unit and to successfully infiltrate the terrorists’ hideout, rescuing the twelve victims.

The landscape featured is the Central Business District of Singapore and the aim of this stage is to acquire skills like battlefield strategizing, as well as to lead the unit of soldiers. Being ranked as junior officer-level, the player commands platoons or companies of men, and has to oversee the execution of orders while ensuring the welfare of the men under their command. In addition, junior officer-level soldiers are most important in small-unit combat, and earn the respect of their men by leading by example. As such, the player cannot merely use his men as pawns despite being a superior; he has to work in tandem with them, while leading them, in order to accomplish the mission. In addition, points will be taken off for every soldier under his command killed.

There will also be an incident to further the plot when the mission has been successfully carried out: under interrogation, the terrorists refuse to yield any information about the motives behind their attacks. However, one of the kidnapped civilians had managed to eavesdrop and obtain the password for the SIM card. Accessing the information on the SIM card, the player discovers a voice message on the phone, revealing their hideout situated on an isolated island off the shore of Singapore.

SCENARIO 4: THE FINAL SHOWDOWN!

In this stage, the terrorists have failed in their terrorist missions and have fled to their hideout.

The player’s mission is to engage in full-fledged warfare with the terrorists and end the war. The landscape featured would be an isolated island off the shore of Singapore, modeled on Pulau Ubin, and the aim of this stage is to acquire skills like battlefield strategies, battle leadership and the ability to control large-size weaponry such as tanks.

Now, being ranked as the commander, the player has to oversee the whole battalion as well as to make up strategies on the spot, when faced with sudden situations. Similar to stage three, the player cannot merely use his men as pawns despite being a superior; he has to work in tandem with them, while leading them, in order to accomplish the mission. In addition, points will be taken off for every soldier under his command killed.

The plot would be completed at this stage, where the secret would be revealed (as exposed when our game is released)

MISC. FEATURES

  • A realistic portrayal of military experience, from exploring the development of soldiers in individual and collective training to their deployment in simulated missions in the war on terror.
  • Feature of some weapons used by the Singapore Armed Forces.
  • Scenarios that are relevant and are the current concern of Singapore (e.g. terrorism).
  • Showcasing and application of battlefield strategies.
  • Game should be made online, so as to encourage interaction between players.
  • There should be emphasis on leadership (e.g. squad leaders and fire team leaders can see their soldiers at all times, granting them the means to better coordinate unit actions and maximize soldier welfare.)
  • There should be full-screen map toggle function, which allow players to better comprehend their mission goals, team proximity and relative position on the game map.
  • The Situational Awareness Indicator (SAI) would help players to work as a team and achieve their missions in a coordinated manner. It allows squad leaders to monitor the locations of their subordinates, and players in non-leadership positions will always see their superiors to suggest the existence of communication. It also effectively creates the possibility of linking to players not in one’s Direct Line of Sight.
  • The “Enemy Spotted” command, under the SAI, designates a red marker at the point the player was aiming. Squad leaders can designate a target which will cause the icon to flash momentarily.
